A Dominican Republic native was detained overnight by Police following an accident in the area of Fresh Water Pond, West End that claimed the life of Maxwell Smith, a retired Police Officer and former political candidate last evening, January 8.

Reports suggest that Smith, who resided at Sea Cows Bay, was the driver of a vehicle proceeding east when he collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

According to information, the man detained was the driver of a rental vehicle which was involved in the accident. No charges have been laid, but Police continue to investigate the incident.

The impact sent Smith's vehicle plunging into the sea.

BVI Platinum News understands that Smith was in the vehicle with two other persons, including a child. The two persons reportedly escaped any serious injuries.

Reports say that following the accident, other drivers attempted to resuscitate Smith before emergency officials arrived on the scene.

Smith was rushed to Peebles Hospital where he later died.

Politicians joined several family members at the hospital.

What is the "right thing"? Everybody think their ideas are the "right thing", but how do we know for sure that the "right thing" is?

All police and fire personnel should be trained in basic life saving skills . We see government and police vehicles traveling all hours and all areas of the island day and night.

ALL POLICE AND FIRE VEHICLES SHOULD CARRY EMERGENCY OXYGEN EQUIPMENT .

The road is not dangerous, its the idiots that use it that are the problem. There are many dark roads all over the world, but it how people drive on them that makes the difference.

The blame of this senseless death is squarely on the shoulders of the Governments and the police. The authorities total lack of will to tackle dangerous and reckless driving on this island has resulted in this untimely loss of life. What as waste of a good man, what a waste of a once great country.
