A 60 year-old United States citizen of Puerto Rico was today, July 25, remanded to prison after he refused to cooperate with lawmen, prosecution and the sitting Magistrate.
Augusto Marquez is charged with assault on Police and will return to court on August 20 when his matter will be dealt with by the Magistrate.
During his court appearance, Marquez said he wanted his matter to be dealt on another date since he is tired and fed up. At first, the court instructed that he receives an interpreter, but Marquez said he does not want an interpreter.
"Send me to jail. I know my rights," he stated.
However, Magistrate Tamia Richards said he has to have an interpreter since she must understand clearly what he is stating in court.
The man, who said he works as an independent contractor for Road Town Wholesale, threw himself down in the prisoner's dock and stated, "I cannot stand. They abused me. I have a bruise on my foot and I was badly abused because I was preaching the word of the Lord. I am fed up."
He then stood up and said, "Take me to jail or just take a gun and shoot me."
The Magistrate said Marquez is not listening or cooperating with the process. She said there is nothing she can do if he is not cooperating.
Magistrate Richards stated that if he gets another date it will be after August 13, since the court closes on Friday and on the other dates the court is packed.
He then asked the Magistrate why he is in court and he was told that the prosecution objected to bail because he has no ties to the BVI.
He said he as a work permit; however, it was stated in court that Road Town Wholesale has turned in his work permit.
Marquez said he travelled the world and this has never happened to him.
Due to the constant loud outbursts by the defendant, the Magistrate was forced to call for order on several occasions; however, Marquez continued to shout over the Magistrate's voice.
Magistrate Richards then stated that he is remanded to prison until August 20 when she will deal with the matter.
It is alleged that Marquez assaulted a Police Officer who approached him in relation to theft allegations involving copper wire and refrigerant gas.
An interpreter was used during today's hearing.
