Neville Brathwaite used his strong and forceful serves to earn five straight points to seal a straight-sets victory for the host British Virgin Islands against Montserrat in their first game of the 2014 World Championship qualifiers.
With the BVI needing five points for a comprehensive victory, Brathwaite took the ball to the baseline and served powerful strikes as Montserrat struggled to keep pace and construct proper returns.
A small crowd at the Multipurpose Sports Complex on June 7, watched the BVI power their way to victory; 25-14, 25-4 and 25-10.
Brathwaite told BVI Platinum News that the first game was important for the BVI to gauge its performance for the rest of the tournament.
"We did well as a team. I just did my part for the team down at the end of the game with the serves. It is our first actual match in a while so it gave us a good gauge to move forward in the remaining games," Brathwaite stated.
"They have been our rivals for a long time...this is an important match tonight. We are on a point system so we are trying to get as much points as possible," Brathwaite stated.
The first round of the NORCECA Men's Pool F of the 2014 World Championships Qualifiers also featured Montserrat and Dominica.
An opening ceremony was held before the matches started at 6:00 pm.
