The British Virgin Islands has been rewarded for being among the top six best Caribbean wedding destinations.
Premier and Minister for Tourism, Hon. Dr. Orlando Smith during the National Democratic Party's (NDP) radio programme earlier this week disclosed that during a recent visit to New York, the BVI received an award in this respect from an international magazine.
He said the BVI was among six Caribbean countries that got the award.
Premier Smith added, "During my visit in London and New York, one of the things I was looking at is how we can promote our destination more effectively."
On May 10, Legislators passed amendments to the Marriage Act as Government expressed the need for the Territory to enhance its competitiveness as a wedding and honeymoon destination. The amendments, tabled by Premier Smith, will see reduced residency requirements for a special marriage license from three days to one.
The current rule states that a couple is required to be in the BVI for three business days before they can be married. Applications must be made at the Attorney General's Office.
During the debate, Members of the House supported the Bill and Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn said the wedding industry in the United States is booming and like other Caribbean countries, the BVI must position itself to benefit from the industry.
Members echoed the same view that the objective of the Bill can only be realized if it is properly marketed.
Another proud moment for the BVI.
