Scotiabank is now the official sponsor of the BVI Cricket Association´s 20-20 domestic cricket tournament, currently being played at the Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground.
Small Business Manager of Scotiabank BVI, Andy Davis presented a cheque for $4,000 to President of the Association Shan Mohamed on Tuesday, July 3 at the bank´s main branch in Wickham´s Cay, Road Town.
Mr. Davis noted that Scotia Bank is committed to West Indies cricket, not only at the regional level, but also in the individual countries where players develop their game in anticipation of being selected at a higher level.
In announcing the 2012 sponsorship, Davis wished the BVICA a successful tournament, saying Scotia will continue to support cricket development in the territory. There are eight teams vying for the championship, which is used by as the basis for selecting the BVI national team.
The tournament began on 3 June and the next two weeks will see the semi-finals between the top four teams on Sunday 8 July, and a third place play off and final on Sunday 15 July.
Mr. Mohamed thanked Scotia for what he described as a timely contribution toward cricket in the BVI, saying there are many challenges associated with developing the sport in the absence of a proper venue.
"We know that Scotia Bank is no stranger to cricket, having been a major sponsor of the Kiddy Cricket in the region for several years," he said. "We at the Association are happy that this commitment in the BVI has been extended to senior cricket and we look forward to a continuing partnership with Scotia in the years to come."
Scotia Bank has been a regional sponsor of West Indies cricket for the past 13 years and has the status as "Official Bank of the West Indies Team" and "Exclusive Sponsor of Kiddy Cricket" in 14 Caribbean territories.
