Defending women champions, Pythons booked a spot in the championships of the Eva Simmonds 2012 Fast Pitch Softball League following an offensive blitz against West End Warriors last Saturday, July 14.
Led by Darea Malone who finished 4 for 4 with a home run, 5 runs batted in and 4 runs scored, Pythons toppled Warriors 17-7 to sweep their best of three playoff series two games to none to move on to the Championship Series.
Pythons finished with 12 hits, 2 errors and left 5 runners on base while Warriors struck 6 hits, committed 5 errors and left 2 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Annecha Graham and the loser was Sarah Potter.
Pythons took the first game of the series 16-1 behind 12 hits, 1 error and left 4 runners on base. Warriors did not manage any hits in that game, committed 7 errors and left 4 runners on base.
The winning pitcher was Annecha Graham and the loser was Kathleen Fahie. Pythons´ Jelisa Potter of was the star in that game, batting 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run, 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in and Bria Smith was 2 for 3 with a home run, 2 runs scored and a run batted in.
After taking a series lead, Amazon was looking to close out the Hawks on Sunday and book their spot in the championship series, but the game was suspended after the third inning because of darkness with Amazons leading 2-1. The game will be continued on Saturday at noon.
The games between the two teams have been closely contested.
A week ago, Hawks came up with 6 runs in the 5th inning to walk off with a 12-11 victory over Amazons to take a 1-0 lead in their best of three series. Hawks had ended with 4 hits, committed 6 errors and left 6 runners on base, while Amazons finished with 6 hits, 3 errors and left 6 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Eleta Parker and the loser was Shakira Skelton.
At least one run was scored from each position in the Hawks batting order as they were aided by 14 walks and 3 hit batsmen.
On the men´s side, Dwight Brooks and Nikos Penn homered as East Invaders defeated Street Ballerz 14-1 on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in their best of five series. Invaders had 8 hits, 1 error and left 3 runners on base while Street Ballerz finished with 6 hits, 3 errors and left 4 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Nikos Penn and the loser was Raymond Fonseca.
Defending champions Hurricanes defeated Reds 12-9 to take a two games to none lead in their best of five series. Hurricanes collected 14 hits, committed 1 error and left 7 runners on base while the Reds finished with 10 hits, 4 errors and left 7 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Neville Smith and the loser was Lionel Hodge. Sheldon John and Carlos Maynard each went 3-4 for Hurricanes and Jeremy Penn had a home run. Kyle LaMotta had 2 home runs and Lloyd Jackson had one for Reds.
The playoff games continue this weekend at the Old Recreation Grounds.
