Police are asking homeowners to be vigilant in securing valuables particularly as the Territory's upcoming festival season draws closer.

After several weeks of low numbers in reported burglaries, there was a dramatic rise this week with multiple burglaries in the Ballast Bay, Horsepath and Johnson Ghut areas. In one case, an alarm system alerted a homeowner who came home and caught a burglar on his premises.

Police have increased their patrols particularly in neighbourhoods around the Territory.

Acting Commissioner, Alwyn James is asking residents to be on the lookout for suspicious persons in rental vehicles or persons walking around with tools such as a crowbar which often are used to pry open windows or doors and gain entry to homes especially during the day time.

Persons should contact the RVIPF three-digit non-emergency number 311 if anything suspicious is seen or heard.

Persons are also reminded to plan in advance to properly secure valuables such as jewelry and electronic items.

Homeowners are asked to inspect their premises and secure windows and doors, particularly those out of public view and more susceptible to break-ins. The installation of alarm systems and in cases of night-time burglaries, external lighting is also encouraged.

Persons with information can also call the anonymously the confidential Crimestoppers hotline number at 800-TIPS (8477) or any officer within the RVIPF.
