It is said that pearls and a lady are inseparable, but reigning Miss BVI, Sharie de Castro will be expected to start a new local pageant tradition and hand over a heirloom piece from Little Switzerland to the next national queen.
The reigning queen was the first to receive the piece and was all smiles when store manager, Josiah Russel presented her with the Mikimoto pearl set of a necklace and matching earrings valued at over $3,000.
Pageant sponsor, the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB) facilitated the prize which will now be worn by ever other Miss BVI.
Russel told reporters that when he was approached by the BVITB, he was happy to provide the gift.
De Castro thanked both the BVITB and Little Switzerland. "I consider it a honour and I am thankful that it was implemented in my year," de Castro stated.
BVITB representative, Kevis Hughes explained that the piece is very symbolic and it is expected to worn by the queen wherever she goes, especially when representing the Territory internationally.
"It's a symbol of success, good hope and beginning. We want to make sure that you continue with that and carry that to whatever event you go to," Hughes told de Castro.
Hughes added that he was confident that the piece will be handed over by reigning queens. He said that logistics about when the piece will be handed over will be worked out by the next pageant committee.
