In a collaborative effort between Government and residents, the Johnson's Ghut area is in the process of receiving a facelift, while Government will be undertaking a number of projects in the coming weeks in District Six, including long-awaited renovations on the Belle Vue gym.
In relation to the beautification of the Johnson's Ghut area, Hon. Alvera Maduro-Caines, Representative for the Sixth District told BVI Platinum News that a few months ago some residents informed her that the area across from Gabby Scatliffe business was in need of much attention due to over grown bushes.
She said as the District Representative along with some residents they came up with a plan to remove all the over grown bushes and debris; and to make the area a mini-park for the residents of the district.
"The National Parks Trust has signed on with us to put some plants in that area which should be done sometime next week. We decided to put two covered benches in that area as persons always stand in that area to catch rides," she stated.
She noted that this means a lot to the people of the area as it provides `a type like sanctuary´ where they can sit, relax and enjoy the environment.
Hon. Maduro-Caines said there are also plans to install a water fountain in the area, and she noted that this is just a small part of the beautification plans for the 6th District.
"The parking lot for the Johnson´s Ghut burial ground will soon get a face lift as well as the road leading to the burial ground. These plans are being finalized now," she pointed out.
The Representative thanked the Minister of Education, Hon. Myron Walwyn and At-Large Representative, Hon. Archibald Christian for partnering with her on the project.
Further, she disclosed that next week they will begin another beautification project headed by the Ministry of Health.
She explained that the project will be a summer project which will involve some youth of the district.
"This project will be the clearing of over grown trees from the middle section of the Purcell road leading up to the Sunrise bakery and replacing with plants and other decorative items which will enhance this area," she stated.
Mention was also made about the wall which is being erected to protect the persons living in the Louise Turnbull apartment and other apartments from heavy flooding. She said there is a phase two to the project which will begin as soon as phase one is completed.
Upcoming Projects
Meanwhile, the District Representative has some good news for the youth in the district as long awaited works on the Belle Vue Gym is expected to commence in the coming weeks.
"I know many persons have been calling with concerns about the Belle Vue gym and this I appreciate. We are now finalizing plans to re-furbish this gym and I am hoping work will begin early next month so we can have it ready for the 6th District basketball tournament," she stated.
Works on the Basketball court in Baugher's Bay will also commence shortly; and it will be completely re-surfaced; and covered bleachers will be installed.

Hon. Maduro-Caines said works are expected to begin next week on a retaining wall to be erected below the hill that leads outwards to Fort Hill from Baugher's Bay.
"We have had too many accidents in that area where cars came down behind houses in that area. Contracts have also been signed for work to begin on a government-owned right away in upper Johnson Ghut. Persons in that area for too long have had to park on the streets and walk to their homes," she stated.
Also, Phase 1 of the Anthia George house project in Jean Hill has been completed and a contract has been signed for phase II which is expected to start next week.
The District Representative said government is still working with persons in connection with the exit road through Baugher's Bay and also redefining plans for the Stone Haven/K-Marks flooding situation. It was noted that the painting of guard rails and sidewalks is continuing.
Despite the works done and others underway, Hon. Maduro-Caines acknowledged that there is a lot more to be done in the district which would not be able to be achieved in one year.
"I am working very hard to meet the needs of this district and the people that reside in it. Once again I would like to thank the people of the 6th district for giving me the chance to represent them and I will endeavour to do my best," she stated.
